Odd odd odd

The immigration chap at Delhi International airport just asked me to
get him a job. As I walked away he made sure to jot down my mobile
phone number from my departure card.

I guess a government job just ain't what it used to be.

No, they ain't!
Increasingly, the govt. is starting to eliminate positions as people retire, and unlike 2 generations ago, Indian govt. jobs are no longer seen as the safe haven that you could stick to till you retired.

When I first arrived in India, I opened a bank account. I then got a call from them asking if I'd be interested in getting a credit card. I said okay and filled out all the paperwork.

Six weeks later I got a call from the bank and was told that my application had been declined. I said thanks and was ready to hang up, the he asked me to confirm my employment details. We did, then he asked if there were any positions available that I could help him get.

I said, "Let me get this straight. You're calling me from the company you work for, declining my application, and then you have the nerve to ask me for a job?"

He said, "Yes."

I replied, "You don't see anything wrong in your actions?"

He responded with a "No."

I shook my head and hung up on him.

Later,
Jeanne

A lot of my relatives in India have lost their jobs. Do you think this trend will continue or will things improve?

@ Anu - I've heard musings of layoffs, but nothing huge here. Just got back from Greece & a visit with our international offices. They've seen much more downturn. Eurpoe & US face shrinking economies this year. We face only a slowing economy.

Thanks for your reply. Hope things improve - but economists are painting a gloomy picture till 2010!
